Cybersecurity company Sophos has published its fifth annual report on The state of Ransomware 2025. Their research investigated the impact of ransomware attacks on different companies. The average amount of money that companies paid for getting their data back was 1 million dollars, so it is clear that cybercrime in general is a huge „business field” and ransomware attacks in particular are very serious problems for companies. Defence technologies evolve quite quickly but 100% security level cannot be reached. In this paper I investigate how data backups can help minimizing the losses in case of a successful ransomware attack – or any other problem resulting in data loss.
